BECOME A SPIRIT JUNKIE

For twenty years I kept a journal. I wrote about heartbreak, anxiety, and eating disorders. I wrote about trying to quit drugs while high on drugs. Pages and pages are filled with self-loathing and self-doubt. My journal was my only outlet from the turmoil and deep-rooted pain I felt every day. I’d release my fears onto the page and get honest about my sadness as I scribbled over my tears.

Today my journal entries are much different. They reflect an empowered woman who is happy and bleeds authenticity. The words on the page are tinged with pride and compassion. I’ve overcome my addictions to love, drugs, food, work, and fear. I worked hard, and man, was it worth it. My journal shows a deep desire to continue growing from the inside out.

My primary guide on my journey to self-love has been the metaphysical text A Course in Miracles. The Course is a self-study curriculum emphasizing practical applications for relinquishing fear in all areas of life. The Course’s unique thought system uses forgiveness as the road to inner peace and happiness.

Admittedly, when I first began reading the Course, the language and many of the concepts were extremely foreign to me. But, ultimately, I realized that getting bogged down in semantics was a silly distraction. What really mattered was how relevant the Course’s teachings were to my life, and my absolute willingness to be guided to change.

It was with that burning desire for change that I set out to purchase the Course to begin with. Upon entering the bookstore, I noticed the dark blue hardback with the title A Course in Miracles scrawled in illuminating gold print across the cover. I found the thickness of the volume inviting and reassuring, and as I grabbed the book off the shelf I smiled as if I had received a wink from the Universe. Then the most auspicious thing happened—the book literally dragged me to the counter. It felt strange and yet, oddly comforting. Intuitively, I knew I was in for something good.

Afterward, as I stood on a busy New York City street corner, I flipped the book open to its Introduction and read, “This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take is voluntary. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance.”  This passage sent chills down my spine. In that moment I made a commitment to myself to become a student and a teacher of the Course—a sacred contract that would change my life.

One year later, I went to a lecture by the renowned spiritual teacher Marianne Williamson, who first introduced me to the Course. Afterward, I asked her advice on how I could spread the Course’s message to my generation. She said, “Read the Text, do the Workbook and study the Manual for Teachers. Then get on your knees and ask God how you should share this work with your generation.” I did just that.
Through reading the Text I was guided to understand the Course’s mission. Simply and succinctly, the Course states that “its goal for you is happiness and peace.” The Text also gave me a deep understanding of the basis for my fear and guilt, and how I could overcome them. Finally, it taught me the meaning of “the miracle,” which is the shift in perception from fear to love.

Then I embarked on the Workbook for Students, which consists of an exercise for each day of the year. The Workbook guided me to know a relationship with what I call my ~ing, an inner guide. This relationship with my ~ing became my primary tool for restoring my mind. When I was ready, I began to practice the Manual for Teachers. This section of the Course prepared me to share its lessons in a way that was authentic to me. My dedication blasted me open to reconnect with my true inner spirit, which is love.

The Course teaches that each time we shift our perception from fear to love we create a miracle. Your internal shifts enhance your external experiences and all your relationships. Serenity kicks in, fear subsides and once and for all you’ll know that all the love you need is inside you.

Sounds like I’ve got the keys to heaven, doesn’t it? That’s right, I do! And I can testify to these tools because I work them like a full-time job. The Course suggests that to teach is to learn, so I’m here to guide and inspire others to turn inward for happiness. If you’re looking for direction and guidance on your own spiritual journey, I’m here to help! I’ve just launched my new book, Spirit Junkie: A Radical Road to Self-Love and Miracles. With this book I can act as a container for you to take right actions to grow a spiritual relationship of your own understanding. Trust, breathe, be willing and show up for the suggestions along the way. Even if fear has you in a headlock, I’m here to remind you that happiness always wins. You too can be a Spirit Junkie!

In remembrance of the lives we lost on 9/11/2001
I urge you to take a moment and remember all that were lost and think of how much our freedom means.
To all of the families, our thoughts are with you on this day.  Even though I live on the west coast, I still cry at the mention or any photo that is posted of the event.  Below the photo is my moments on this day.

I was working the graveyard/night shift at our local hospital as a CNA on the medical/surgical unit.  It had been busy most of the night.  We only had a few patients on our floor, but for some reason everyone was unsettled.  The patients were having a hard time sleeping and my paperwork had been piling up.

Finally, sometime after 2am, everyone on the floor had finally fallen asleep for the remainder of the evening.  The nurse and I decided to sit back and relax.  We were playing a game of rummy and just chatting for a bit.  We drank our coffee and flipped through magazines not knowing what was about to happen.  I didn’t know that while I was laughing at the newest photos of celebrity hairstyles and fashion disasters that a true disaster was beginning to emerge in the morning.

The nurse looked over at me around 5am and said that she felt a little off.  She couldn’t put her finger on it, but she felt like there was something wrong.  We went and checked on each of the patients and nothing was wrong with any of them.  She figured it was just side effects of the 12 hour shift we were on that had been weird from the get go.

While we had just finished up our final morning rounds and were preparing to give the shift change report a final look over, the girls for the next shift started to arrive.  One of them asked if we had watched any of the morning news yet or seen the paper? We told her that we hadn’t done either and that we had been feeling a little off all evening and early morning.  She quickly turned the nurses station TV onto the news and told us to watch.

As we sat there watching the World Trade Centers under attack, we couldn’t believe our eyes.  This doesn’t happen to America!  We are suppose to be safe!  I was in shock at what was happening before my eyes on our small TV.  Even though none of us knew anyone personally in New York or on those planes, we all sat there and cried.  Our shift report was forgotten and we all sat and said a small prayer for everyone involved.

I was tired, but I couldn’t bring myself to go to sleep when I got home.  Thankfully, I was off that evening and was able to stay up and watch the rest of the terror unfold on the television.  I cried for most of the day and my heart broke for each of the lives that I knew were never going to be able to go home to their family again.

When my children came home from school that day, I hugged them and never wanted to let them go.  They were young and didn’t know what was really going on.  Now that they have grown older, they understand and they say a prayer of their own for those lives that were lost.

9/11/2001 is a day that I will never forget what I was doing or the emotions that were going through my heart.  It is a day that America will never forget as well.  I remind my children everyday and especially on 9/11 that I love them.  We watch the remembrance shows on TV and we will NEVER forget what we have learned.  Life is precious and can be taken away in the blink of an eye.

Hold your family safe, and remember those who are not with us today because of this horrible tragedy.

SUMMARY:

Co-owner of the town’s only kennel, Lilah Young has lived in Sunshine, Idaho, all her life. Pilot-for-hire Brady Miller is just passing through. But he soon has Lilah abandoning her instincts and giving in to a primal desire.

It’s Brady’s nature to resist being tied down, but there’s something about Lilah and her menagerie that keeps him coming back for more.

MY THOUGHTS:

After getting hooked on the writing by author Jill Shalvis,  I have been snatching up as many books as I can find by her!  I recently read Animal Attraction is ARC format, and desperately wanted to read the first book to catch up on the town of Sunshine.

In Animal Magnetism,  we get to learn about Brady and Lilah.  Brady is the foster brother of Dell and Adam.  He never really has claimed a “home base” to put down roots.  He comes to Sunshine to help out his brothers by rebuilding a helicopter to help in the aid of animal rescue.  Lilah is such good friends with Dell and Adam that they feel she is like a little sister they never had.  Lilah is owner of the local animal kennel and she is also working on getting her degree through online school.  When she goes into town one morning, she accidentally runs her Jeep into Brady’s truck.  This is the beginning to their wonderful and delightful romance.

I fell in love with Brady just as fast as Lilah did.  He was sexy and very Alpha in personality that made me swoon whenever he got protective of Lilah around other men in town.  I also loved how Brady and Lilah interacted with Dell and Adam.  They were playful and the dialogue was witty and had me laughing out loud several times.

If I had one complaint about the book, it was the fact that there weren’t many obstacles for the couple to over come to be together.  Lilah had a life that was pretty much set in knowing what she wanted and where it would go.  Brady had the only real obstacle of having a job somewhere other than Sunshine, but he also had one he could have at a drop of a hat with Dell and Adam.  While it is mentioned that Brady doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long,  I felt that this wasn’t enough of a conflict to keep the book going. Yet, even with the lack of conflict, I still enjoyed reading about the couple.  I also enjoyed the blossoming relationship between Dell and Jade who will be featured in the next book in the series.

If it is a sweet romance with lovable characters you are looking for, author Jill Shalvis delivers in her Animal series!  I have said it before and I will say it again that I am thrilled to have found the works of Jill Shalvis.  If you haven’t read any of her works before, you really need to jump on the bandwagon of fun romance!

MY RATING:

Very Good! I would recommend this book! 4 STARS

VAMPIRE CRUSH
Author: A.M. Robinson
Source: Library Loan

Reading level: Ages 13 and up
Paperback: 416 pages
Publisher: HarperTeen (December 28, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0061989711
ISBN-13: 978-0061989711

SUMMARY:

I swear, my life was always totally normal.

Normal house, normal family, normal school. My looks are average, I don’t have any superpowers, no one’s showing up to tell me I’m a princess—you get the picture. But when my junior year started, something not normal happened. There were new kids at school . . . new kids with a wardrobe straight out of a 19th-century romance novel, and an inexplicable desire to stay at school until sundown.

And on top of that, James Hallowell showed up. James, who stole my sandwiches in fourth grade and teased me mercilessly through middle school. James, who now seems to have the power to make my heart race any time he comes near.

But something weird is going on. Because James rarely goes out during the day. And he seems stronger than your typical guy. And he knows the new kids, all of whom seem to be harboring some kind of deep secret. . .

MY THOUGHTS:

I have waited forever to read this book after seeing so many reviews on it, and I have to say that it was worth the wait.  This is the authors first book, but you wouldn’t know it by the writing that was printed on the pages between two gorgeous covers.

Sophie is an investigative reporter for her school newspaper.  When she is handed the assignment to interview the new group of kids at school, she finds out more than what she bargained for.  To add to the mysterious friends who have arrived in her school, her friend James arrives back in town at the same time after moving away long ago.  What she discovers though about them all is the fact that they are vampires and determined in finding a special girl who is attending the school.  When she discovers that James is also a vampire now, she struggles with her crush on him and whether or not he is the same James from before on the inside.

Yes, the book is predictable and cliche, but I found myself enjoying the writing so much that it didn’t even bother me.  I loved the witty banter between everyone and the romance between  Sophie and James was sweet and fun.  I wanted more romance between the two, but the author balanced it out well enough to keep the reader happy by the end.  I loved Violet and her crazy ways of trying to fit in by using tons of teen magazines as guides.  The other were okay, but I found Violet to be the best of the bunch.  Vlad was just mean and nasty and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen to him and if Sophie would be the one to do it.

I do hope that the author plans on writing a sequel to this book because some things were not finalized in the story.  Yes, you are left with a finished book, but you can’t help but wonder on a few things and it leaves it open for a sequel.  Plus, I need more James and Sophie, so please Ms. Robinson—keep the books coming!

MY RATING:

Very Good! I would recommend this book!
