Open For Discussion

February 28, 2010 Uncategorized 13

I have been asked by several people lately if I have a Twitter account.  Well, no I don’t and I am wondering what the big thing is about Twitter.  So I thought I would have an open discussion on the issue so I can get more feedback on the pros and cons of it all.

Here are my thoughts, and please feel free to help me out on all of this.

I have my blog and I share a alot in my blog posts. I do my rants when I need to, I post my questions for everyone when I need to, and I post giveaways on blog posts as well.  What is the point of twitter?  To me it seems like just another blog.  I mean, if people are just following Twitter, isn’t it the same as following a blog?  I would rather someone read my blog and comment on it instead of someone just following a Twitter account that only mentions contests and such.  If people want to contact me, email me. It is clearly posted on my blog along with a contact form also.

So what is the big thing about Twitter?  Is there some secret link in your Twitter accounts that push people to your blog?  I am just not understanding the purpose of it.  I am computer dumb, so maybe this is going over my head or something.  I mean, what exactly is RT and all the other mumbo jumbo words that are all over the place?  Isn’t it the same thing as a blog post or an email to someone.  If anything it seems more like and instant messaging system.

What are your thoughts about Twitter?  Do you have Twitter and has it helped with traffic for your blog?  Have you really gotten more exposure with it?

Well you can only have 140 characters, so theres not to much you can say, but its live so as soon as someone im following posts something I can see it. I also list all my blog posts on there for people who don’t follow my blog to see the links.

I talk with people on there, back and forth, other bloggers and authors. It’s easy. It’s just like chatting but you can also just post status updates or you can reply to someone elses update. Its kinda cool.

If you get one my twitter name is ssalach21

    🙂

Amy – I’m with you!! What the heck is twitter and why do we need it?? A computer genius, I aint!! I still can’t figure out RSS feeds and such..I’ll just stick with following blogs the “old-fashioned” way!!

For me, it’s another way to network, another way to post links, and another way to communicate with people. I don’t know if it’s made a difference one way or another for traffic purposes but for me it’s definitely fun and a way to find out about contests/interesting posts/whatever. To each their own though!

I have an account, but I’m not there all the time. I mostly use it as a place to announce when contests and reviews are posted.

Sherry- Doesn’t it get tiresome though to post on your blog and then have to go repost on Twitter as well??

Martha- Amen to that! I am still trying out how to do everything on my blog! I had to ask Anna a questions today because I am computer dumb!

Emily- But don’t you find out about contests from reading the blogs?

Anna- Again, don’t you just announce them on your blogs or read about them there?

I just don’t think I am getting my brain wrapped around the whole thing. What is so funny is my mom and I don’t understand that if this country is in such need of money, why don’t they just go print some more and pay off the debt?? LOL Yes my father has tried explaining this as well and I still say just go print more money! LOL

Im glad that you wrote this because I have been wondering the same thing lately. Then yesterday my mother spoke to an author who was interested in doing an author interview, but asked that I contact her on twitter. I dont have a twitter account, nor have I ever even considered getting one. Now I am thinking that I should – but like you Amy, it seems to me like I would have to do everything twice?

Becky-EXACTLY! Thats what I was thinking! I just think what is the point in just reading about something twice let alone writing it twice! I would rather have a comment and a follow on my blog than just a message board.

I didn’t get the whole idea of Twitter either, but now I have an account and I’m really liking it. I like that I can have conversations with bloggers in real time, as opposed to commenting back and forth on posts. I also like it because I can converse with authors on there, where otherwise they wouldn’t even know I existed. So, like Emily said, it’s just another way to network and get to know people better.

Maybe you should give it a try. Say 30 days, and if you don’t see any benefits just cancel the account. But you’ll never know if you like or don’t like it until you actually try it. That’s just my two cents. 😉

I have had a lot of followers from my Twitter account. It’s basically just another way to draw people in. You do need to talk about other things to though.

(I just noticed that you have the Jane background that I was deliberating over for a month ) Love it!

    Hey Amy…

I do have a Twitter account, but from day one I knew I was not a social media type of person as I think stuff like that is a major time suck…

But the lovely thing with Twiiter is that it have a feed from my blog to twitter – so although I never tweet on it – all my post automatically gets bumped onto it…

I didnt think I will ever be a tweet head – as I do tend to speak to people in more than 140 characters and secondly – I do not have the time to stay chained to a phone or a pc to carry on these sort of frivolous chatter…

It works for alot of people and I say – go you – but for me, the post bump is fine…

I have a twitter and I love it. I use it to connect more with bloggers and authors, we don’t always talk about what is going on with our blogs or contests. Sometimes we use twitter to vent, to rave, or to just talk. I’ve connected with some authors I really admire via twitter. Plus it’s real time. I don’t look at twitter as another blog platform though, except as a place to post a link to my latest post which takes five seconds to link. Also, according to google analytics I average around 60 hits per post which come in from twitter.
