Written in the 1850s by a young doctor, Henry Gray, Gray’s Anatomy was the most comprehensive and accessible anatomy of its time. This beautifully produced slipcased volume contains the historic text of the second edition and all of Henry Vandyke Carter’s masterly drawings. It is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the history of medicine or in the amazingly complex machine that is the human body.

If you plan on working in the medical field as a Doctor, Surgeon, or if you just want to expand your medical knowledge of the human anatomy, then this is the book.  This hardcover comes in a slipcased box to keep it protected. Inside the book you can find things like skeletal breakdowns, muscular breakdowns, and illustrations of each with in depth reading in each section.

I work in the medical field and I have always had a fascination of how the human body works and is built.  This book is a must have in learning these things.  The illustrations are a bonus to the reading. I proudly display this on my bookshelf and find myself looking through it for many pieces of information.

twinkie cookbook

Ah. Twinkies.

The sugar filled (and cream filled) cakes we would scream with joy to see packed in our lunchbox growing up. The dessert was one that children would trade anything in their lunch for in the cafeteria. Then came the scare of Twinkies never being around again. Thankfully they are back on the shelves and now Hostess is celebrating with an 85th anniversary Edition cookbook for Twinkie lovers.

Looking through the photos and the names of the recipes, I admit to drooling and craving a Twinkie. I might have ate one or two (or three) while also devouring the pages of this cookbook.  I learned new ways to include the Twinkie in several dessert dishes  I wouldn’t have really thought about. A few of the recipes were generic and with not much thought really, but it is including Twinkies! How are they suppose to improve on something that is already perfect?

There were a few flaws with the electronic version I received. The recipes were split up weird with half the recipe on one page, and the rest on the next. Pictures were also cut in half and split up the same way.  In my opinion, this would be better as a print book than as an electronic edition.

I am horrible.  I have been reading like crazy but slacking on actually posting reviews about them.  I have this list going with the name of the book, rating, and a few notes to remember about each one.  So at least I have something to give you!  Below are a few books that were on that list.  I have more but I thought I would break it up into a few posts so it wouldn’t overwhelm you like it has me!

rulesaccordingtogracieThe Rules According to Gracie by Stefanie London
3 Stars
-This was a cute, but short read. Coming in at a listed 98 pages made for a quick build up for the two characters. While I liked Des, I wasn’t too excited about Gracie.

DectheHollsDec the Holls by Jasinda Wilder
3 Stars
-Another book that was good but would have benefited with being a bit longer. This one came in at 51 pages but would have been better if we would have gotten just a smidgen more of Declan and Holly. Yes, it is focused around Christmas, but good to read any time of the year.

falloutFall Out (SEALs Undone #1) by Zoe York
3 Stars
-Coming in at 155 pages, this book had the length I needed, but the characters were just mediocre for my taste.  The writing was well done, but the plot had too many ups and downs for my liking. The romance just didn’t seem to click for me either.

knowinghissecretKnowing His Secret (Year of the Billionaire Part 1) by K.C. Falls
1 Star
-177 pages of characters I couldn’t stand.  That about sums it up.  We have a hero who is a jerk and a woman who is dull.  Not only were the characters not to my taste, but the book is a serial which is not something I read too often.

giftsinjarsGifts in Jars: Recipes for Easy, Delicious, Inexpensive DIY Gifts by Margaret Lowe
3 Stars
-I got this one around Christmas time when my kids were looking for ways to make home made gifts for the teacher and aides.  Let me tell you, there was some yummy sounding jar gifts in this book.  If I had actually had the time, we probably could have thrown together a few.  Maybe next year though.

americas most wanted recipes

The average American family eats out three or more times per week, which translates into hundreds of dollars spent on food each month. In these hard economic times, families simply can’t afford to keep paying these high prices. And Ron Douglas has spent the past five years of his life ensuring that we won’t have to. With the help of a test kitchen and more than 45,000 tasters, he uncovered the carefully guarded recipes of the most popular meals at restaurants across the country. With his easy-to-follow steps, families can now enjoy the meals they love most at a price they can actually afford.

MY REVIEW

I am on a small kick of finding cookbooks to stock in my kitchen that I can rely on when needing that perfect recipe.  I am in no way a great cook. Most of the time, my kids look at anything I cook and wonder if they will survive the night if they eat it.  So on the quest to not only learn how to cook properly, I am also looking for recipes that recreate some of the favorites we eat when we go out to dinner.  Not a simple task.

There were a few good looking recipes in this book that held promise. The T.G.I. Fridays Honey Mustard Dressing and the IHOP Buttermilk Pancakes looked fairly easy and tasted pretty close to the secret recipes of the famous restaurants. There aren’t that many recipes though in this book that I would be searching for.  I also noticed that though I am familiar with most of the establishments mentioned in this book, it is favored to certain areas and not everyone would know the restaurants.

While I enjoyed browsing through the recipes, I will have to pass on keeping this one on my kitchen cookbook shelf.  It is not one I would use often enough to  practice with or to even reference in the future for meals.
