Life’s That Way
A Memoir

SUMMARY
(From Goodreads)

A special book about the end of one life and the beginning of another.

Life’s That Way is a modern-day Book of Job. In August 2003, Jim Beaver, a character actor whom many know from the popular HBO series Deadwood, and his wife Cecily learned what they thought was the worst news possible- their daughter Maddie was autistic. Then six weeks later the roof fell in-Cecily was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer.

Jim immediately began writing a nightly e-mail as a way to keep more than one hundred family and friends up to date about Cecily’s condition. Soon four thousand people a day, from all around the world, were receiving them. Initially a cathartic exercise for Jim, the prose turned into an unforgettable journey for his readers.

Cecily died four months after being diagnosed, but Jim continued the e-mails for a year after her diagnosis, revealing how he and Maddie coped with Cecily’s death and how they managed to move forward. Life’s That Way is a compilation of those nightly e-mails. Jim’s experience is universal for anybody who has lost a loved one. But Life’s That Way is not solely about loss. It is an immediate, day-by-day account of living through a nightmare but also of discovering the joy of a child, of being on the receiving end of unthinkable kindness, and of learning to navigate life anew. As Jim says, these are hard-won blessings. But then again, life’s that way

MY THOUGHTS

As most of you know, I am not a big fan of memoirs or biography.  I usually pass on them because I have enough going on in my life that I don’t need to read about someone else’s.  When I saw this book on a search for books about autism, I looked over the summary and realized it deals with much more than just a child with a disability.  This is a story of strength, hope, death and most important — love.  Then I looked further and realized the author was an actor on one of my favorite shows.  I immediately checked it out from the library and started this painful journey with an amazing and gifted actor.

After a hard time conceiving a child, Jim and Cecily finally welcome a daughter and name her Maddie.  While Maddie is young, they learn that she has autism. Six weeks later Cecily — who is not a smoker — is diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.  After making many calls to family and friends, Jim sits down at his computer and decides to email everyone daily updates on Cecily and Maddie.

Jim describes this as the roof falling in.  With the heartfelt and heart wrenching details that Jim gives us, I can understand how he felt this way.  While reading about his journey though, you see him handle it with dignity and with great strength.  He slowly rebuilds that roof one piece at a time after the death of his wife. She may have lost her battle with cancer, but she has left him with a piece of her that shines in the eyes of their child.

I will warn readers though,  have the tissues handy.  One box of tissues later, I hugged my daughter — who has autism as well –and didn’t want to let her go even with her pushing me away.  Life is short, but there are also lights to keep us warm when things become cold and empty.

This is one memoir that I am glad I picked up and one that will stay in my thoughts for a long time to come.

MY RATING

Outstanding book that will stay on my bookshelf for rereading!

MY THOUGHTS

Every once in awhile, a book comes along that blows you away and you weren’t expecting it.  With Easy by Tammara Webber, I thought it would just be another book about young adult romance that got slapped with the new classification of New Adult.  Seriously everyone? What is “New Adult” suppose to use for guidelines?  Anyway, when I started reading this book, I instantly fell in love with the authors voice and ability to portray characters with realism.

One thing I like about this book is the focus on the one subject that some feel should not be written about.  This one thing that is taboo to write about, is also one thing that needs to be addressed more so that victims of this crime will know that it is okay to speak up about it.  I am talking about the crime of Rape.  This one event can change a person for years to come whether you are the victim of the actual crime, or a person who knows someone who has been there.  We hardly ever hear about this subject in young adult books.  We hardly ever read about it in adult romance either.  I am glad an author pushed the envelope and decided to go there.

When Jacqueline is attacked after a late party by Buck — by someone she has known and doesn’t think would ever do such a thing — Lucas comes to her rescue.  He happened to be passing by when the attack occurs.  Jacqueline is fresh from a break up with her long time boyfriend Kennedy and sinks further into a depressed state after the attack.  When she finally comes back to life and school after a few weeks, she realizes that she might end up failing one of her classes from not showing up.  The teacher gives her one chance to make up her grade by agreeing to meet with a tutor and providing a substitute project instead of a failing grade on her tests.  Landon becomes her tutor thought they never meet in person and just talk through emails.  Or so she thinks.

What I loved most about this book is the slow build between Jacqueline and Lucas.  What starts out as some quick rebound thing, actually turns into what Jacqueline needed all along.  Lucas was sweet and considerate to her feelings.  He was supportive and heroic.  With that said though, he never went overboard on the ego.  They felt like real people you would come into contact with at a college without the over the top cliches that some stories have.

I can say that without a doubt, this book is easily going on my Top Picks for 2012.  One of the best young adult/new adult romance for this year.

MY THOUGHTS

First, thank you to author Aleatha Romig for allowing me to read and review this book early! Not only was she generous in allowing me to do this, but she is one author who follows along with your status updates just so she can cry, yell and jump for joy at the same time as the reader.

After the first book in the series, I had no idea how the author was going to fix things.  If you haven’t read the first book, I urge you to get on it.  This is not a stand alone book and you will have to have read the first one titled Consequences to really understand what is going on and the personalities of each character.  At the conclusion of Consequences, I sobbed for Claire and had the strong emotion of hate for Tony.  I wanted him to pay.  I wanted him to be filled with the devastation and despair that Claire was filled with.  Most of all, I think I secretly wanted him redeemed.  I don’t know how the author would be able to do it, but if it was going to be an option, I had a small part of me cheering for it.  Call it the romance-lover-at-heart part of me that will not ever go away.

If you didn’t follow along with my status updates on Goodreads, you were missing out. I was all over the emotional board with this book.  Just when you think you have something figured out, the author basically grabs your brain and throws it up against your skull with a new discovery.  Yes, I went through with the morbid description, but how can you not with characters such as Tony?

From the first chapter of the book, the author clues us in on small things we wonder about.  I can’t go into too much detail, but trust me in saying that the author created a masterpiece of a puzzle. At about 6% into the book when that first chapter is brought to light for Tony, all I can say is everyone better watch out!  Tony is NOT a happy camper.

I will say that Claire does get a stronger backbone in this book.  There were times where I was screaming at her not to do what she was doing, but by the end of this book, you will be surprised by the consequences of some of them.

That ending was OUTRAGEOUS!  Did it make the reader feel fulfilled? In a way, but now there are a whole new set of questions for us as well!  Another puzzle to add to the previous one and that is unraveling so wonderfully! Please, Ms. Romig…..give us the third book fast!!! I can’t wait until the end of 2013 for it. I know you have it all figured out and sitting on your hard drive.  Just let me peek. PLEASE!!!

Bitter Blood
Series: Morganville Vampires #13
Author: Rachel Caine
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Source: Publisher
ISBN: 9780451238115

SUMMARY
(From Goodreads)

For years, the human and vampire residents of Morganville, Texas, have managed to co-exist in peace. But now that the threat to the vampires has been defeated, the human residents are learning that the gravest danger they face is the enemy within…

Thanks to the eradication of the parasitic creatures known as the draug, the vampires of Morganville have been freed of their usual constraints. With the vampires indulging their every whim, the town’s human population is determined to hold on to their lives by taking up arms. But college student Claire Danvers isn’t about to take sides, considering she has ties to both the humans and the vampires.

To make matters worse, a television show comes to Morganville looking for ghosts, just as vampire and human politics collide. Now, Claire and her friends have to figure out how to keep the peace without ending up on the nightly news… or worse.

MY THOUGHTS

Oh Morganville, how I have missed you. This series is addictive and never fails at nonstop action and adventure. Please forgive me for being so vague in this review, but if I were to say to much it would give away so much of the story.  We can’t have all the secrets spilled like blood in one review!

Bitter Blood is again told from multiple POV’s from all our favorite characters.  The one that excited me the most was Myrnin though! We get to glimpse into his crazy mind and the author did a wonderful job of letting the reader understand what he goes through each day.  Myrnin also knows that Morganville is changing.  It is  finally coming down to a war between the humans and the vampires.  Sides will need to be chosen and our loyal group of four will find themselves put right in the middle of it.  Previous evil villains will reemerge and try to play the game of chess with lives of all.  Some you won’t expect, others you will.  One character will finally die, but I won’t tell you which one or how.

We will also see the marriage between a vampire and human –Eve and Michael– come to a major play for this book.  Amelie didn’t want this marriage to take place for a reason and it will be revealed why in this book.  Shane and Claire will also have their own relationship struggle that will change their outcome as well.

Can I just say that what the author gave me as a reader in the last half of the book, was some of the best she has written yet.  She wasn’t afraid to take the road the fans will hate, but in time I believe it is for the best.  There has been build up for this scene throughout the last few books — if not all — that finally comes to a climax. I think I was just as flabbergasted and shocked as the characters.

After thirteen installments in the Morganville story, it is great to know that the author can keep shocking me and keeping the story line interesting.  For fans of Morganville, do not miss this one.  Things are changing and evolving with each new chapter!

MY FAVORITE QUOTE

–I lifted one foot from the brackish water, and the bunny slippers were soaked and drooped pathetically.  Even the fangs seemed robbed of any charm.
“Don’t worry,” I told it.  “Someone will pay for your suffering. Heavily.  With screaming.”
I felt I should repeat it for the other slipper, in case there should be any bad feelings between the two.  One should never create tension between ones’s footwear.
–POV is Myrnin, page 221

SUMMARY
(From Goodreads)

Gideon Cross. As beautiful and flawless on the outside as he was damaged and tormented on the inside. He was a bright, scorching flame that singed me with the darkest of pleasures. I couldn’t stay away. I didn’t want to. He was my addiction… my every desire… mine.

My past was as violent as his, and I was just as broken. We’d never work. It was too hard, too painful… except when it was perfect. Those moments when the driving hunger and desperate love were the most exquisite insanity. We were bound by our need. And our passion would take us beyond our limits to the sweetest, sharpest edge of obsession…

MY THOUGHTS

OMG! Oh..my..GOD!  Seriously?! This is how the author is going to leave us?  Okay, I am still floored by the ending of this book — even though we should have seen it coming — and I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to write a review for this.  I know if you are a fan of this series, you have already been stalking other reviews, so I want go into too much detail.  Besides, if I were to go into too many details, it would spoil much of the book.

Gideon. I am now head over heels in love with you.  I was slow going and tried really hard not to let you into my heart, but I failed. I was a bigger fan of Gideon in this book and started to throw imaginary daggers at Eva.  I fell so hard for Gideon that in his words — ” I won’t survive you.”

On with the regular part of the review.  This book in the series focused on Gideon and Eva trying to build their relationship into something solid.  They are going to couple’s counseling and trying to make it work despite the obstacles thrown at them every other page.  There were some small things that happened and then there were huge things that happened.  The one big thing was at the end and literally in the last chapter.  I can’t believe it and my jaw is on the floor with my heart.  I had a what-the-heck moment and had to reread that chapter several times.  I just knew I was reading it wrong.

All I can say is that if you are a fan of this series, read it.  Flat out simple.
If you haven’t started this series yet, then you forfeit your claim in the future of having Gideon as your book boyfriend and I claim him now with no take-backs.
